San Miguel de Allende
is one of Mexico's marvelous
colonial towns. It is located at an altitude of 6,300 feet, which is
approximately the altitude of Lake Tahoe. It's only a four
hour drive from Mexico City. Many wonderful colonial buildings can
be found here.The entire town has been
declared a national monument to control development and preserve it's
colonial nature.
The population is estimated at 80,000 with approximately 5,000 North Americans. San Miguel de Allende also has a new modern hospital operated by a private non-profit association. A number of art schools are found here, and many fine artists reside in San Miguel.
Activities/Recreation available: golf, tennis, horseback riding, yoga and
dance classes, amateur string quartets, bird watching, duplicate bridge,
amateur theater groups, and an American Legion post.
There is a weekly English language newspaper.
There are many other beautiful colonial cities in Mexico, and more will be featured in Virtual Mexico eventually. Among those cities are: Guanajuato, Taxco, Morelia, Tequisquiapan, Querétero, and Puebla. CLIMATE: A wonderful year-round climate is experienced in San Miguel.
