The central plateaus of Mexico range from 4000 feet above sea level to
more than 7000 ft. The terrain varies from dry desert in the north, active and extinct volcanoes, towering mountain ranges, and peaceful valleys. As in the rest of Mexico, agriculture plays a big role. All kinds of produce is grown in Mexico. |

CLIMATE:
Most authors have described the climate in the southern central highlands as 'eternal spring', and that just about sums it up. It rarely gets excessively hot or cold. Compared to other highlands in Central America, it is relatively dry on Mexico's plateaus.
Check on the average temperatures in Guadalajara.
In the tropics, the temperature drops with altitude, and that is why most
people in Mexico live on the central plateau of the country. Cities like
Guadalajara and Lake Chapala are located at approximately 5000 feet above
sea level. Mexico City is located around 7000 ft.
We are only including data on the following locations at this time
as most North Americans live in these cities:
There are other nice central highlands cities that are suitable for retirement, and more may be included in Virtual Mexico in the future. Of course many North Americans live in Mexico City, but we do not particularly recommend that city for retirees, although it is certainly worth a visit.
There are more than 40,000 North Americans living in the Guadalajara - Lake Chapala areas. Many support groups exist to help you decide if you would want to retire to Mexico. This area may well be the first location you should investigate, as more information is available here than most other places.
